There are people who make a difference on occasion, and here is a man we will call Dr.Collins, a noble Irish American doctor. My daughter’s in hospital physician who informed me today as we discussed her discharge that her state insurance denied any coverage after last Friday, she was admitted, with eighty cuts on last Tuesday.
He said that he would appeal that decision and fight for the coverage… my stomach sank as I asked him what a person in my situation, a widow who lives below the poverty level does in a situation like this, do I too need to appeal the denial? To which he replied, oh no Ma’am you won’t be billed for this.
What? Is this some form of modern day kindness? Is this an ancient healer in my midst? A physician actually doing what is best for his patient regardless of being paid or not (I should also mention at this point that he heads up the hospital). This is a current day anomaly, to say the least.
I am already in debt over $15000.00 from her first stay at a small town facility when she made her suicide attempt years ago. I would never want her to know this or feel guilty. Tis but a modern day reality for I would dare say of the majority of us, the unentitled, the abandoned, the working poor, the waitress who pours your coffee.
I told him if I could do anything to help the appeal I would, he said sometimes it does help to have a family member speak. I said just say the word.
Eighty cuts is significant enough to require as stay passed the normal 72 hour meet and greet and hit the street most sick people receive at these hospitals.
But it is good to know that certain members of the medical community are fighting for the health of their patients and not just Audi’s and golf dates on the world’s finest courses.
Thank you “Dr. Collins”. You make Apollo proud…
